De Iuliis Semillon 2005

De Iuliis SemillonWriting a review for a young Semillon is hard, there are only so many ways you can say “lemon” and “acid”. I tasted the De Iuliis Semillon 1999 at the cellar door this week, and subsequently purchased a bottle of the 2005 vintage from our local bottle shop. For what its worth, this wine also made James Hallidays “Top 100″ wines this year.

Pale straw in colour, this Semillon smells of grapes and lemon sherbert. Full flavoured and lemony, it has a good whack of acidity as well.

I would not really recommend this wine for drinking young, but it would not hurt to stash a few bottles away. The score is based on how the wine is drinking now. I contacted De Iuliis via email requesting a bottle photo, however the did not respond. *Edit* Thanks to GW for providing me with a bottle shot.

Score: 85/100
Price: $14
Closure: Screwcap
Alcohol: 11.5%
Other Opinions: De Iuliis
Would I buy this wine again?
Yes, to cellar for 5+ years.

  2. Since I dont feel I can predict how a wine will taste in 5+ years time, im just scoring it as it drinks now. Still, I will be buying some more of it, that should mean more than the score.

No photo due to the bottle vanishing!

  3. I just received the following email from Michael @ De Iuliis, clearly they would have sent a bottle photo had the email not been lost in the system:

    “Hi Murray,

I just saw your review of our Semillon on your website.

I have checked and I have no record of receiving an email requesting a bottle shot. I do apologise, and in the future please do not hesitate to contact me on this email address and I will do my best.

Also thanks for checking out the wine, and taking the time to review it.

    Cheers,
    Mike De Iuliis”

  4. Hey Murray must be time for a new post????
Have you tried the ‘Hungerford Hill’ Kiss shiraz 2005 yet?

  5. I agree it is time for a new post, however flu and other factors have resulted in no wine consumption for over two weeks!

Im guessing you are referring to the Thomas Kiss Shiraz 2005? I have tried it at the cellar door and purchased a bottle to put away for a special occassion in a few years… It was excellent.

  6. Murray,
FYI I was in the Hunter two weekends ago and sat down with Michael for an interview about their winery and the role of a cellar door in the business mix. It should be in the feed in a few weeks.
Also finally got a look at Meerea Park (which i think you mentioned a while back). Very nice indeed. No interview unfortunately.

  7. Hugo,

I always look forward to your podcasts, however a hunter valley focus makes it even more interesting!
