Ferngrove 2003 Shiraz

Ferngrove ShirazThis dry and peppery shiraz comes from the cooler climate of the Frankland River on the southern edge of Western Australia. It was recommended to us at our local bottle shop as an “underrated” wine that many people avoid purely based on the label. Coming in at only $16, the decision to give it a go was an easy one.

The Ferngrove website is currently unavailable, however a tasting note can be found here. I tend to disagree with the assessment of dark fruit flavours on the palate, in fact my only complaint about this wine was that there is a distinct lack of fruit flavours to be found. The palate was rather dry, with strong spices coming to the fore, especially black pepper. The finish was long, however slightly bitter.

Score: 6/10
Would I buy this wine again?
My taste in shiraz tends to fall somewhere in between the “fruit bombs” typically found in the barossa and this dry and spicy offering. I would not buy this wine again, however if you do prever a dry and leaner red, then this may hit the spot at its price point.
